Lake Ouachita

I grew up taking most family vacations to Lake Ouachita in west Arkansas. When I was really young my family tent camped up there. Until a really heavy rain storm came and flooded the tent we camped in we’d tent camp. After this trip I’m told my grandpa said enough of that non sense and went and bought a camper. We then camped in a few different campers for several years then my grandparents bought a house trailer on the lake when I was about 12 or 13 (don’t remember exactly when). Lake Ouachita is a place of many memories with so many family members and friends.

Now fast forward years and many trips. I don’t remember the year but I was married with kids at the time. I don’t make it up to Lake Ouachita much now because it is 4 hours away for me and my family. I had went up for the weekend and fished Saturday with my dad and grandma. My dad had to head home Saturday evening so I fished with my grandma Sunday morning then planned to head home myself. She loved Crappie fishing on Lake Ouachita. We didn’t have much luck catching fish Sunday morning. I was getting tired and dreaded the long drive home. She wanted to try one more spot we hadn’t been to yet that weekend, it was getting close to lunch but we went on since it was close to our house. And wouldn’t you know it we started catching fish. I think I caught the first one (which is odd especially when fishing with her). We backed up a bit and tied the boat to a tree so the wind didn’t blow us in on top of the fish. We continued catching fish tied up to the tree. I sure am thankful for that memory, just wish I had taken a photo.

This would end up being the last time I got to fish with her as she was diagnosed with cancer later that year. A few years later I was up with my dad, we fished Saturday then headed home Sunday morning. Before we left I walked out and took the picture below of the spot she and I fished. Today I’m thankful for these memories and the people and places along the way.
