Tornado Path From Space

Excuse me for a minute while I map nerd out for a few. The other day I saw a post from Todd Yakoubian at KATV of a picture of the Little Rock, AR March 31 tornado path taken from an airplane. Being the map nerd I am I wondered if the path could be seen from a satellite. A satellite source I like to use is called Landsat and is operated by the USGS. I went and downloaded a few captures from Landsat and below is what I saw.

I went back to March 7, 2023 before the tornado.
The trouble from satellite is if there’s clouds over the area when it passes. (March 15)
April 16, 2023 Landsat. Can you see it?
Let’s add some boundaries for reference. County in red and city limits in yellow. (April 16)
Green line added for better reference in case you’ve not seen it yet. (April 16)
April 16th again without the green line.
Compare with and without line. (April 16)
March 7 vs. April 16

A data source we have here in Arkansas is 911 Address Points. These points are maintained by the county 911 office for 911 response to an address. When you call 911 and reference a location these points are what shows up to the dispatcher. This dataset is maintained at the local county and sometimes the city also works on it. The address is mapped when assigned on new structures. These points are all addresses both residential and commercial but will give you a view of population of the area. It’s also important to note that these points are maintained at the local level but housed at the state level which is where I got the copy from. My friends at the Arkansas Geographic Information Office (AGIO) work day in and day out at providing updates of this data to users of the data here in the state.

I appreciate you stopping by today and reading my map nerd stuff. It’s important to note the green line above is just a quick graphical representation. I’m sure there is more accurate data out there on the tornado path if you’re looking for that type of information. Send me a message of when looking at this post which image you did see the damage in first, was it before the green line or after. Thanks!

I want to say thanks for stopping by to read my ramblings. To say thanks more I have a few free phone wallpapers here.

Please do me a favor, if you enjoyed the post please share it with a friend.

A poster with one of my favorite photos can be purchased here.

Thank So Much! -Michael
