To help me document this journey on chasing the Roseate Spoonbill for today’s Muddy Water And Cypress Trees Post I thought I would put everything into one post as a reminder to me of a goal accomplished.
This began at my job and a work day at Freddie Black Choctaw Island WMA West Unit. Before leaving for the work day a biologist mentioned seeing some Roseate Spoonbills at Choctaw recently and where they had been seen. I really had no idea what a Roseate Spoonbill was so I did the usual thing and Googled the bird. I saw from my Google search it was a beautiful bird. I put my camera bag into the truck just in case we saw them. I believe I did see one flying over but did not have my camera out of the bag plus it was really too high in the sky for a good photo.
Parts 1-3
Since I did see one but unable to get a photograph, I was very interested in trying to get a photo. This took me back to Freddie Black Choctaw Island West Unit WMA when I was not working. I ended up splitting this trip into three parts on my blog since I took so many photographs.
Part one was some of the views/photographs from around the West Unit of Choctaw. Freddie Black Choctaw Island Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is one of my favorite places to go take photos and walk around.
Part two was still from around the West Unit of Choctaw. While there I saw some whitetail deer that cooperated for some photographs. I’ll post a few of them again but you can see them all by going to part 2 separately. The late evening light on these photos was beautiful to me.
Part three was still from around the West Unit of Choctaw. While back to where I saw the spoonbill flying over and where I had been told by co-workers they had been seen I saw a young gator in the water.
Parts 4-10
Oh the drives! I wish I had kept up with the miles.
The fourth part of this I decided to drive down to Felsenthal NWR and Overflow NWR south in Ashley County. Still no luck but I come away with a few photos.
Part 5 was a drive along the Mississippi River Levee from Lake Village, AR to Arkansas City, AR. This would be the same area I did see them in later. As always the wildlife on this trip was plentiful even though I did not see the Roseate Spoonbill it was a good drive.
We had a hot summer so I just rode around looking for the Roseate Spoonbill. I ended driving up around the Arkansas River on a Sunday afternoon for part 6.
I thought it cooled off some so I decided to go walk at Cane Creek State Park to see if I could see any. It was still hot! I did not get a lot of photos on this outing.
I went back to Choctaw on Labor Day and walked some more. It was very hot. While I was on this trip someone ended up seeing some at few other spots and reported the sightings on the eBird site. These reports would be very helpful to me in the coming weeks! I did see a young gator again on this trip, I’m thinking it might be the same on from part 3.
I took my son over to Choctaw Island WMA – East Unit to mess around on the river. He loves the river and everything you can do on the sandbars there. I really did not get many photographs on this trip but had a great time with him.
I know you’re thinking 10 parts, really? Well, actually there’s more but it took a while to see them!
I did finally find them from a trip report I read on eBird from early September, as I say around the time I was sweating back at Choctaw. I drove down to Grand Lake at Eudora, AR and did finally see the Roseate Spoonbills as reported on eBird!
I hit the road the next week for another sighting reported on eBird. This time was back to the same Mississippi River Levee drive I took in part 5.
I hope you’ve enjoyed these reports. I really appreciate you stopping by to take a look!
I want to say thanks for stopping by to read my ramblings. To say thanks more I have a few free phone wallpapers here.
Please do me a favor, if you enjoyed the post please share it with a friend.
Thank So Much! -Michael
