This post will be a multiple items update on some stuff going on in the garden right now. My garden is going full speed right now…
First is an update on my sunflowers. I’ve mentioned a sunflower challenge I’ve been doing with my friend Robbie over at the Wild Huckleberry YouTube channel. Robbie updated not long ago that his plants did not do well this yar but watching his video I told him who I did not want to challenge next year. Check out the Wild Huckleberry:
Here’s a photo of my sunflowers right now. My best plant is not one I expected to grow as well as it did but it’s done great (I don’t remember the variety). I did not get a picture of it standing tall, it’s already started to droop it’s flower. Excuse my picture, I was about to go mow before it got too hot!
If you’ll remember I posted a while back on the plant which I had hoped would be my tallest but it’s not close. When I took the photo I said pay attention to the flowers in the background because you could barely see them then but now I can barely walk down my row here.
I want to update on my Cactus Mix Zinnias, this is the first year I’ve grown Cactus Mix from Hoss Tools. So far these plants have really showed out! I started these from seed at the end of March indoors and they began blooming middle of May. We really enjoy growing Zinnias!
Something else I’m doing in the garden is a compost pile. I’ll us the compost to amend my garden next year as my soil is very sandy and I’d like some organic material in the soil. This winter we had a big freeze which lasted about a week, it cause our Live Oaks to drop every leaf so I’m using the leaf piles from that as my carbon (brown) material and grass clipping from when I mow as my nitrogen (green) material. I built a cage to let it break down in but I filled one so I built a second one that I’m filling now.

Thanks so much for stopping by to read my ramblings! I have a few requests:
- Please consider subscribing if you’d like to be notified of when I post again.
- Share with a friend.
These three items help me to know if I am doing this right. A comment (good or bad) helps me to know what’s working and what’s not.
Thanks!

-Michael Gilbert
