Today I want to update you all on the height of my tallest sunflower this spring but first a few garden updates. We’re in the “dog days of summer” so there’s not a lot going on right now!
The other day I walked by the Zinnias and the pollinators were everywhere. I caught this picture of a butterfly with my cell phone…
I have a cover crop growing right now where I plan to grow tomatoes next year. This is Iron Clay Cowpeas. I’ve had good luck with growing cowpeas in a mixed plot but this year I’m trying them alone. I’ll see how they do like this a write an update as they grow.
Now on to the sunflower update. This is the same plant I took a picture of next to the other day (you can see that picture here). We had some rain here this week so the plant fell over. I took it out of the garden to measure it’s height.
I do not remember but this is probably a Mammoth Sunflower. I took a picture of my hand over the seed head. I tossed the seed head out in the garden for the birds. I’ve noticed lately quite a few birds in the garden feeding on sunflower seeds.
Thanks so much for stopping by to read my ramblings! I have a few requests:
- Please consider subscribing if you’d like to be notified of when I post again.
- Share with a friend.
These three items help me to know if I am doing this right. A comment (good or bad) helps me to know what’s working and what’s not.
Thanks!

-Michael Gilbert
