I’m meeting with a good friend at work to discuss professional development type stuff. We’ve been friends for a long time and personally have a lot in common. In our first meeting he discussed a book, Grit by Angela Duckworth. He’s going through the book right now with his team and thought I’d like it too.
My first thought on grit was it is the “I’m doing things my way, I don’t care what you think” kind of mentality. I told him based on that definition I did not have much grit. He encouraged me that he felt I did have grit. I’ve just started to read it and am getting corrected on that definition. But…
As I was waiting on the book to come in I was reading Don’t Give The Enemy A Seat At Your Table by Louie Giglio. I thought it was interesting as I’m reading the Louie Giglio book, a book on faith, a heading in Chapter 8 was: “The Grit of Grace”. I thought, “Ok God, let’s go -Grit (never a thought on my list).” I made a few notes tying these two books together:
“Grace has grit, backbone, and muscle. Grace is the left hook that destroys the power of sin.” -Louie Giglio
“Yet the ultimate solution is always (I underlined the ‘is always‘) the grace of God” -Louie Giglio
“Some people are great when things are going well, but (I underlined the ‘but’) they fall apart when things aren’t.” -Angela Duckworth
“It was this (what’s this? See note below) combination of passion and perseverance made high achievers special. In a word they had grit (I underlined ‘grit’)!” -Angela Duckworth
This:
1.) Resilient and hardworking
2.) They knew in a very, very deep way what they wanted
As I read grit my initial thought on the meaning of the word is changing from being “it’s my way or the highway” to being a whole lot more about knowing what you believe.
Here it is for me:
And while I’m attempting to exalt Christ I strive for the “pauses” in life…

My grit, my victory, my hope – comes through my faith in Christ in his resurrection!
As the song, Because He Lives” says: “And then as death gives way to victory, I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives.”
I just love that line, “…gives way to victory…”
VICTORY!
Thanks so much for stopping by to read my ramblings! I have a few requests:
- Please consider subscribing if you’d like to be notified of when I post again.
- Share with a friend.
These three items help me to know if I am doing this right. A comment (good or bad) helps me to know what’s working and what’s not.
Thanks!
